All SketchesIn-Progress PhotosFinal Self-PotraitSelf Evaluation Questions1. I started by going on the internet and finding pictures of the Terminator's face. Then I took pictures of myself and made sketches with some parts of my face missing, showing the endoskeleton. I chose to base my final drawing off of my second sketch, because it had more parts exposed and I wasn't wearing glasses, which I think made it a little easier. I then started on my final portrait drawing. I made the head shape, neck, and shoulders first. After that, I drew the nose, mouth, hair and left eye. I had to redraw them a few times to make them more realistic and proportional. I added on rips and tears to show the skull. I added values to everything. The values on the skull are based off the first picture in the sketches, as it gave me the best view and clarity of the endoskeleton's face. I used Q-tips to make the values smoother.
2. My choice of representation was to make myself appear withered and robotic, as the movies show T-800's skull exposed underneath Arnold Schwarzenegger's face. I think this was an interesting choice for a stylized, yet realistic self-portrait. The metallic surface of the endoskeleton would provide a wide range of values. 3. I used the drawing pencils to show the values. I was originally planning to use the colored pencils, but I was unsure if I would be able to make the right color to match my skin color, let alone show a range of values. I had already used the drawing pencils before, so I thought I could do my best using them. I used the Q-tips to blend and smoothen the values, as it would make it neater. I used H, 4B and 8B pencils, as well as a little bit of a No. 2 pencil. 4. I think the picture is mostly very neat. The values are properly shaded, and the proportions are close to what they are in the reference photos. I think my left eye and hair could've been neater. I don't think my eye looks nearly as realistic as it could've been, and I don't think the shading on my hair is very accurate to the photo. I also think my mouth is a little too small. My first attempts were too big, but now that I look at it, it should've been a little wider. 5. I captured my look by paying close attention to where my facial features are in the photo of myself. I had to redraw some parts a few times to not only make it more accurate, but also to consider where the exposed parts of the endoskeleton would be. 6. I used a ruler to measure the ideal distances between parts, such as making sure the eyes are not lopsided, and to make sure they are not too high up on my face. I also paid attention to the sketch I was using. Some details needed to be tweaked a little to make them more realistic and proportional. One of the most important parts of the portrait was make it seem as if the skull was truly behind my face and as such, I need to make sure it was accurate and proportional to both the photo of my face, and the photo of the Terminator's face. 7. It is important to know how to draw every facial feature properly to make the most accurate portrait. All the skills are put together. It's like a video game; the player must know every important technique and move to succeed later on, when the game becomes harder and more demanding. This is especially true here, as every person's face has many minor details that need to be considered when drawing a realistic portrait. 8. I think the most beneficial part of this unit was the assignment in which we needed to draw all of our facial features. It was essentially an early version of our self-portrait. We had to accurately replicate our facial features. I think I did a better job of that on the that assignment than this final portrait drawing. 9. My main obstacles were my left eye and hair. I had trouble making it look realistic and proportional. The eyelashes were also difficult to replicate accurately. I still attempted to make it realistic, following along with my picture to match the shape and position of the eyeball. Shading the hair wasn't too difficult, it was making it realistic that made it hard. I thought that using Q-tips would make it look better, but it didn't improve by much. Each strand of hair has to be drawn and shaded accurately, which I was not able to do. There were so many values on my hair in the photo, and it would've been painful and time consuming to replicate it as accurately as possible. I still tried to shade accordingly, though. Although it isn't prefect, I tried my best to make it seem as if my hair in the portrait had many strands and values.

This is another in-progress photo of my drawing. I am mostly finished with the details and features, now I just need to add colors and values. The exposed parts of the Terminator skeleton have been tweaked to more accurately resemble my face and the Terminator's skull. It still isn't perfect, of course. I may need to alter some of these details before coloring the drawing. I feel that this is easier than before, but it might be because there isn't as much detail yet, such as the changes in values on my face and my eyebrows.
I added more to my self portrait drawing. I have included my nose, mouth ears and hair. The hair was a little difficult. I tried my best to match the shape, but the top of my head is a little cut off.
This is my in-progress self portrait drawing. I will be using this picture of me as a reference. I had a fairly easy time getting the shape of my head. I expect this to become more difficult later on. I think taking off my glasses for the picture is helpful, so that I can focus on detailing the areas around my eyes.
Reference PhotosSketchesWe were asked to post reference photos and sketches. I have decided to go with the Terminator idea. The sketches were fairly easy to draw, and I didn't have too much trouble finding photos of the Terminator's endoskeleton. I think the first Terminator photo was the best for these sketches, as it gave me a clear view of the details. I prefer the second sketch over the first.

Face but the hair is made of lightning bolts. 15. My face distorted by broken glass. We had to come up with fifteen ideas for our self portrait project. This is what I have come up with. Ideas 1,2,11,13, and 14 are my favorite ones. Some of them were easy to come up with, but I some trouble. I think these ideas will work well for this project. This is the completed drawing of my facial features. We were not required to add hair. I also decided to include little bits of facial hair and acne to add more detail. I think it looks good, but some of the values are not blended in the best way. I also think I made the space between my mouth and chin a little too long. I think the other values and proportions were done well.
This is my in progress drawing of my face. For this assignment, we have to draw our facial features based on what we've learned and practiced. I think this is going fine for now. I based the proportions based on what we practiced yesterday, and how my nose, mouth, and eyes are positioned in the photo. I didn't have too much trouble on this yet.
This is my in progress photo of the project. We have to submit this today to be counted present, as we do not have live class today. I tried to draw the pencils as accurately as I could based on how they were positioned in relation to each other and the lines on the inside of my drawer. Because of this, the pencils in the drawing are not the same size, unlike the actual pencils in the package. Despite this, I think this is good progress for now. |
